At Ascendance we are building tomorrow’s hybrid-electric aviation with ATEA, a unique Vertical Take-Off and Landing (VTOL) aircraft powered by STERNA, our in-house hybrid-electric propulsion system. Your role

Within STERNA team, you will lead modeling efforts to capitalize on the company’s various propulsion testbenches to create a digital twin of the propulsion system that will serve as both a sizing tool for future developments and a certification support to extrapolate test data.

With the coordination of the hybrid architect you will work closely with all team members to gather information to build your digital twin with multiphysics considerations describing the propulsion system’s electrical, thermal and mechanical integration and constraints.

As modeling lead you will also lead the team’s effort to integrate the digital twin into various testing environments such as simulators, hardware testbenches with HIL objectives or software testbenches with SIL objectives. You will also lead data acquisition schemes for the various testbenches to ensure proper implementation and update of the digital twin as well as associated test procedures to acquire such data.

Your objectives

Lead the design, implementation and testing of the propulsion system’s digital twin to serve company objectives in both technical and communication aspects

Lead the capitalisation efforts of the company’s propulsion testbenches in terms of data acquisition, model refining and results extrapolation.

Provide support to each major propulsion subsystem leader to create ad-hoc models to serve trade-offs and design decisions

Build a reliable, version controlled and stable digital twin of the propulsion system, STERNA to serve for certification purposes.

Model and predict performance on the electrical machines including transient behavior and failure cases.

Drive the different trade-offs at system level and actively participate in aircraft level trade-offs to reach a global optimum in design and performance including solutions recommendations and associated implementation.

Actively participate hands-on in the integration and testing campaign phases of your system as well as the aircraft flight tests.

Analyse tests to identify improvements that you will design and implement

Your profile

We are looking for someone who:

  • Has had extensive experience building complex yet representative digital twins of vehicles (ground of flying) in terms of performance and behavior
  • Has a proven track record of leveraging both 1D models with tools such as Simscape or Amesim and 3D models with tools such as Comsol to achieve the right level of granularity for various objectives.
  • Is proficient in the Matlab & Simulink software suite
  • Is able to lead modeling efforts across the propulsion systems team to drive each building block owner to contribute to their building block’s digital twin.
  • Has a broad understanding of various fields of study and physical domains to be able to drive modeling in electrical, mechanical and thermal behavioral models
  • Has extensive experience recalibrating models based on test data to ensure representativity

It would be a plus if you but not mandatory !

  • Have experience in working in a certification centric environment with a high traceability and quality assurance demand on modeling activities
  • Have experience modeling powertrains in the automotive or aeronautics industry
  • Have experience in modeling hybrid electric powertrains
  • Have experience modeling battery behavior
  • Have experience modeling propellers and other aerodynamic actuators in a Multiphysics environment
  • Know hybrid propulsion systems.
  • Have experience of CS-23 and/or CS-27 certification requirements
  • Have experience in industry standards such as DO-160.
  • Know and use UML/SysML modelling language

In a nutshell, we are looking for someone with:

  • Has 5+ years experience in modeling activities in the automotive or aeronautics sector predicting performance of powertrains
  • A drive for qualitative, evolving models that grow with the product with a focus on quality and traceability to use it as a tool for certification
  • A hands-on innovative approach to Multiphysics modeling with a taste for challenging problems.
